Hiking Lake Louise
Published in Paperback by Luminous Compositions Ltd. (01 April, 1999)
Author: Mike Potter
Average review score:

Makes It Sound So Easy
The first portion of the book gives alot helpful information that is necessay for anyone thinking of hiking in the Canadian Rockies--from the gear needed for the hike to the precautions that need to be taken with hazards related to hiking. The author does an excellent job of linking each hike in a particular area to the next one, so that a hiker could possibly continue on right into the next degree of difficulty--if one were so inclined, or had enough time and preparation. Each hike is covered in very good detail, including: distance one way, degree of difficulty, elevation change, highest elevation reached on the hike, and location of the tailhead. Many beautiful colored and black & white photos were also included. The one thing that I thought was a little bit lacking was the detail of the maps. Several hikes in each area were included on the same map, and sometimes it got somewhat cluttered looking on the map. Overall I would highly recommend this book to anyone who was just a beginner or to those who wanted to strike out on the next degree of difficulty--all the way up to scaling some of the taller peaks in the Lake Louise area.

A GOOD BOOK FOR LATER ELEMENTARY
This was a good book but I would not recommend it for kids ages 4-8. It was quite verbous. It was very informational, however, and a good source to use in the classroom.

In Search of Lake Monsters
Published in Hardcover by Putnam Pub Group (July, 1974)
Author: P. Costello
Average review score:

Good reference source.
The author discusses countless tales of unknown water monsters from around the world, and leaves judgement as to their existence to the reader. Well researched, it provides a great deal of information, albeit some of the reference sources are inaccurate, this, however is compensated by a book which is of value to the subjects of Cryptozoology/Dracontology and is also a worthwhile read.

Indian Clothing of the Great Lakes, 1740-1840
Published in Paperback by Eagle's View Publishing (December, 1988)
Authors: Sheryl Hartman, Greg Hudson, Joe Lee, and Montejon Smith
Average review score:

Authentic & Useful
If you are looking for new design ideas or if you have ever been curious about what the First Americans might have worn a couple of hundred years ago, this book offers a wealth of information.

Here you can find detailed drawings of blouses, skirts, men's shirts and leggings, moccasins and head coverings. Although the book doesn't include patterns per se, the written instructions appear to be detailed enough for most readers with some sewing experience to follow. (As a very amateur seamstress, I have to admit I would have liked more detailed explanations, espeically for the finger weaving section).

Since this book includes clothing of all the Great Lakes tribes, you can see the variations in design and construction between the peoples of that area. However, as Hartman points out, it is almost impossible to identify clothing as belonging to a specific tribe. Contact among these people offered the opportunity for trade as well as imitation of dress styles. Looking at the many drawings, you can see the influence that the French and other Europeans had on clothing and jewelry design.

However, this is more than just a sewing or design book. In addition to the pictures and how-to sections, Hartman also includes quite a bit of historical and cultural information. She briefly mentions the role of trade silver used for decoration. (If this is a subject that interests you, you may want to look at "The Covenant Chain, Indian Ceremonial and Trade Silver," by N. Jaye Fredrickson.)

The Inhabitant of the Lake and Less Welcome Tenants
Published in Hardcover by Arkham House Pub (June, 1964)
Author: Ramsey Campbell
Average review score:

Campbell as a teenager
Ramsey Campbell was "discovered" by August Derleth, who published this collection of stories when Campbell was 19. Here is the genesis of all the staples of the maturing Campbell--Brichester, The Revelations of Glaaki, and all sorts of other Lovecraft pastiche.

If you ever happen to see this book, look it over as an extraodinary historical document in the career of one of our more literate contemporary writers in the horror genre.

Introduction to Paddling : Canoeing Basics for Lakes and Rivers
Published in Paperback by Menasha Ridge Press (01 October, 1996)
Author: American Canoe Association
Average review score:

Good first manual for novice recreational paddlers
The American Canoe Association's Introduction to Paddling, canoeing basics for lakes and rivers, is a short and clear introduction to canoeing. It describes the canoe and related equipment, how to use same, and several cautionary thoughts.

The strokes described are few and clear, and river maneuvers and safety considerations are clearly laid out.

A fine introductory handbook for any novice canoeist, and probably all that is needed for thye casual paddler
